News Report from NBC4 Los Angeles
Friday, April 20th, 2012
The official opening of the Los Angeles Brewing Company Thursday in the historic Chapman Building is part of an effort to revitalize the historic Broadway corridor.
A packed house at the Los Angeles Brewing Company on Broadway in downtown LA Thursday night, as it celebrated its official grand opening.
It's no coincidence that just 2 blocks away, also on Broadway, UMAMIcatessen celebrated its grand opening last night. Both restaurants are part of the Bringing Back Broadway initiative, a 10 year plan by Councilmember Jose Huizar to revitalize the historic street.
"We have a 15-20% vacancy rate on the ground floor. We have more than a million square feet of vacant space on the upper floors of these gorgeous, beautiful historic buildings," according to Jessica Wethington McLean/Executive Director, Bringing Back Broadway
And there's more to come, including an ACE Hotel at the United Artists Theatre Building and a Ross in the 700 block, but much more needs to be done.

drink me Takes A Look At LABC

The first thing you notice when you make your way into Downtown LA’s newest brewhouse is the sheer number of taps behind the bar–100 in all.  But the Los Angeles Brewing Company (950 S. Broadway) isn’t just about quantity, it’s about quality.  This stylish and lofty bar and restaurant offers one of the most diverse arrays of craft brews that you’ll find anywhere in the city.

This might not be the typical neighborhood to find such an establishment, but setting up shop in the middle of downtown allowed proprietor Ralph Verdugo the opportunity to open a spacious and friendly beer-lovers paradise that is accessible to aficionados from all parts of this notoriously expansive metropolis. Open daily for lunch, LABC offers business-types the ability to take a much needed break from the work day with a veritable laundry-list of beer and bar bite pairings.

On a recent outing, I enjoyed some tasty Brewery Sliders–made with a proprietary, chorizo-like meat blend–and washed them down with a refreshingly bitter Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA.  In the kitchen, Chef Carlos Garcia does a superb job of crafting dishes to compliment the multitudes of flavors provided by the endless selection of beers.

While seated at the impressive cracked mirror glasstop bar, the chef brought me out an earthy, robust cream of mushroom soup with fried shallots that was hearty but not too thick.  It was the perfect accoutrement to the similarly deep flavors of Great Divide’s Yeti Imperial Stout–the same deliciously dark beer that they use on their desert menu to accompany a cinnamon roll made with actual Guinness.

Los Angeles Brewing Company is open daily until 2AM and their kitchen dishes out the goodness until midnight, so its the perfect spot to hit up after an exciting evening at nearby LA Live, or after a Lakers or Clippers game.  As baseball season is right around the corner, it’s also an ideal locale to catch the action on TV, with several huge projection screens strategically placed throughout their vast interior.

Although they do offer it on draft, LABC is not exactly the place to come if you’re a Bud or Miller kinda guy.  This hip new spot is designed by and for the craft beer junkie.  If you fall into that category, pay them a visit the next time you’re in town…You won’t be disappointed, and you won’t leave thirsty.

What to Expect at the Los Angeles Brewing Company

Zagat
By Merrill Shindler

Now, how many times have we written that the revival of Downtown is hitting its stride at last? And how many more times will we write those words in the future? For even though the formerly (and still occasionally) blighted streets of Downtown are a destination for many, they still aren't a destination for all. But it keeps getting closer - especially with the opening of the instantly jammed Umamicatessen on 9th and Broadway - and two weeks later with the launch of the Los Angeles Brewing Company on 8th and Broadway featuring beer, sliders, a great pineapple upside-down cake and more:

The Space

Carved out of a building that dates back more than a century, LA Brewing is a dramatic space, with a ceiling that seems to ripple, a mezzanine reached by marble and wrought iron stairs, a bar long enough to accommodate 100 beer taps - and many secrets. There's also a door downstairs that was welded shut, and when it was opened, it revealed a tunnel built during Prohibition - no doubt to smuggle in illicit hooch. Upstairs, the dining room is spacious - and filled all day long, often offering a wait of an hour or more at prime time. The good news is while you wait, there are dozens of big screens on which to watch the (many) games of the moment.

The Food

Both beer-friendly, and family friendly, the menu is reasonably priced (most dishes are $10 or less) and accessible, with options like hand cut garlic fries with a lemon aïoli for dipping; hot wings flavored with Argentinean spices and topped with crumbles of Maytag blue cheese; sliders on Hawaiian sweet rolls; a vegan pappardelle Bolognese -and for dessert, brownies made with stout, and an individual pineapple upside-down cake with vanilla ice cream.

The Drinks

Though there's a full bar here with bartenders who can create all the drinks you might need, LA Brewing is all about its beers, featuring 100 on tap, with a list that runs (for a change) from the deeply obscure, to the sort of brews loved by regular folks. Think everything from Lost Coast Brewery Great White and Goose Island Pepe Nero...to Bud Light and Michelob Ultra. Most brewpub don't bother with standard-issue beers, but here there's respect for all shades of the beer-drinking spectrum. We'll raise a mug of Pabst Blue Ribbon to 'em for that.

The Crowd

Early in the day, there are families seated at the tables, including babes in prams, with Mom and Dad catching a brew and a burger after a day shopping the discount streets of Downtown. As the day stretches into night, the club kids appear, thirsty for an IPA, hungry for some pulled pork. And at the shank's end of the night, there's the crowd from shows at Nokia and Staples - and especially from The Orpheum down the street (where Australian Pink Floyd recently performed).

The Vibe

There's no attitude at LA Brewing. The front of the house staff has been trained well to make everyone feel as if they're special. The lead hostess (a J-Lo doppelgänger) has a smile that lights up the whole block. A few more places like this, and Westsiders will gladly brave the Santa Monica Freeway for a taste of Downtown.

New L.A. Restaurant Offers Dog Valet

LOS ANGELES - Want to hit the town but reluctant to leave your dog home alone?

A new bar and restaurant in downtown L.A. has a novel solution: take your doggie to dinner with you... And they'll do the dog-sitting.

The Los Angeles Brewing Company, now in a 'soft' opening but gearing up for their grand opening on April 5th, offers a 'dog valet' service where you can park your pooch while you dine.

The service is free, but there is a requirement that your dog must be licensed by L.A. County. This ensures that any dog brought to the Brewing Company facility will have a proper rabies vaccination.

The area set aside for doggie care is separate from the drinking and dining area, so a spokesman for the Brewing Company says there were no health department issues in setting up the service.

The canine-only patio adjacent to the restaurant is open from noon till 10 p.m. daily.

Brew Crush: A Bar With 100 Taps and a Dog Valet

URBANDADDY: Los Angeles - Nightlife
March 16, 2012

But you, you’re thinking small. Low-key.

Oh, you might stop by a new, discreet little Downtown hideaway, but they only have 100 beer taps...

Take a look at Los Angeles Brewing Company, a massive two-level shrine to beer and beer again, opening tomorrow at noon.

It’s sort of like this place dropped from the sky to handle all your beer needs vis-à-vis March Madness and Irish holidays. They even have a dog valet—just drop your pup at the entrance, and the dog-sitter will maintain order on the dogs-only patio while you’re inside. Dog valet: such a better idea than bike valet.

With your mutt taken care of, you’ll head with your friends into the cavernous main room and commandeer a table anywhere—the marble tops were salvaged from the historic Bank of America building. (That’s where you are, FYI.)

Wherever you end up, you shouldn’t have a problem seeing the game on one of eight huge projection screens. And you shouldn’t have a problem getting a hot dog, a braised bourbon BBQ pulled-pork sandwich... and a beer. They’ve got everything from Eagle Rock Brewery’s Red Velvet to Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Porter coming from their 100 taps. And they’ve got about 30 more by the bottle.

You like to plan ahead for your 101st round.
